Deafconnect is committed to supporting our communication professionals in their continuing professional development (CPD).  If you’re interested in joining this group, please get in touch. 

This qualification is designed to teach learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. They will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL.

BSL 1 assessment is divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately; Introduction to BSL; Conversational BSL; Communicate in BSL about Everyday Life.

The course runs over 64 hours with an additional 26 hours study time outside of the lessons. Each class is usually 2 hours long held on an evening or Saturday during Term Time.

This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop their skills to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of everyday situations. The qualification will allow learners to participate in longer and more varied conversations than at Level 1. The course will develop communication in BSL about real life, routine, and daily experiences. The learner will be able to deal with most routine communication and have enough understanding of grammar to cope with some non-routine communication. BSL 2 is also divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately.

The course runs over 100 hours with an additional 50 hours study time outside of the lessons. Each class is usually 2½ hours long held on an evening or Saturday during Term Time.

Learn British Sign Language

Did you know that there are more than 10 million people in the UK with some form of hearing loss, that’s one in six of the population.  Everyone should learn how to communicate with them so take the first step and enrol in a course, you will find that British Sign Language or BSL is a fun, engaging and interesting language to learn.

Deaf Awareness Training

Our Deaf Awareness Courses provide cover the following in 3 hours and we will train up to 20 people in each session

We are able to adapt the basic training to meet any specific needs, but will need to meet and discuss this with them at least a week prior to the training date. The general course outline is as follows:

  • To understand how communication barriers can be break down
    To understand d/Deaf people’s needs
  • Terminology used to describe deafness
  • Statistics
  • The different means of communication including Lipreading exercises and basic BSL
  • Discrimination and the barriers affecting deaf people every day
  • Barriers to communication and overcoming them
  • Equipment available to support independence
  • Communication services
